Capital punishment is a more economical measure to deal with heinous criminals (topic sentence). If a person has been sentenced to death, the average time he has to spend in the jail till his sentence is carried out is eight years (fact concerning ‘Death Row’). Research done by TIME magazine shows that, in the United States, the government spends $22,000 per year to support one prisoner (Statistical Support for cost of imprisonment). The cost of imprisonment pending execution is less than for life imprisonment (Support of 1st fact – death row imprisonment shorter, so less costly). It is a more economical measure also because it does not increase pressure on the existing overcrowding in most prisons which will require the spending of huge sums of money to build more prison facilities and employ more prison staff (additional supporting fact – less prison space required). The cost of construction averages $54000 per bed (statistical support for 2nd fact). Why should the taxpayers’ money used to support heinous criminals? Death penalty cases overall cost $1 million less than life sentence for an equivalent period of 8 years (statistical support for main idea of paragraph). Hence, it is more economical to execute those convicted of serious crimes after keeping them in prison for eight years (thesis of paragraph – sums up main idea).
